Rise Up & Give

Texas Blood Institute is encouraging donors to rise up and give! Blood donors will receive a free, limited edition t-shirt, February 1 through March 14.

“Nearly a year of the COVID-19 pandemic has put incredible strain on the blood supply,” said John Armitage, M.D., president and CEO of Texas Blood Institute. “Whether they’re fighting cancer or a blood disorder, or overcoming trauma, patients in our community hospitals depend on blood every day. COVID-19 patients in intensive care are also counting on convalescent plasma—which can only be provided by those who have recovered from the virus or who test positive for the antibodies. Patients are the reason we’re asking anyone and everyone who is able to donate blood or plasma to ‘rise up and give’ as often as they can.”

Individuals aged sixteen and up are urged to give blood.

Blood drives will be managed according to CDC safety recommendations. Masks required. Texas Blood Institute is committed to maintaining the safest standards for blood collection, testing and transfusion.

Blood donation typically takes only about an hour, and one donation saves up to three lives. Appointments are encouraged for social distancing, and can be made by calling 1-877-340-8777, or clicking here to find a blood drive near you.

Or you can stop by our donor center in Wichita Falls.

All donations will be tested for COVID-19 antibodies to identify potential convalescent plasma donors.*

Those who have recovered from COVID-19 may be eligible to donate convalescent plasma. Call 888-308-3924 or email coviddonor@obi.org to make an appointment.

*16-year-olds must weigh at least 125 pounds and provide signed parental permission; 17-year-olds must weigh at least 125 pounds; 18+ year olds must weigh at least 110 pounds. Photo ID required.  Donors ages 16 or 17-years old need parental consent to be screened for COVID-19 antibodies and are not eligible to donate convalescent plasma. This test has not been FDA cleared or approved. It has been authorized by the FDA under an EUA (Emergency Use Authorization) for use by authorized laboratories. The test has been authorized only for the detection of the IgG antibody against SARS-CoV-2, not for any other viruses or pathogens. Blood drives will be managed according to CDC safety recommendations. Test results will be made available post-donation.

In this way, donors can doubly give - both by donating life-saving blood used locally, and by assisting blood centers in developing countries with supplies.

Support has been provided to blood centers in countries such as Kenya, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Mexico, Japan, Georgia and Armenia.

FEEL ESSENTIAL. GIVE BLOOD.

It is critical that O-negative donors donate regularly since only 9% of the population has this blood type, and can only receive this same blood type.

Having O-negative blood available is vital because it can be used by any person in the 8 medical facilities we serve who may be in urgent need but whose blood type hasn’t yet been identified.

Imagine if a family member, friend or co-worker was in urgent need of blood. Donating every 56 days, and encouraging others with O-negative blood type to do the same, ensures your loved ones would receive the life-saving blood when they need it.
